Documentation

Depending on your settings and tweaks, your documentation will look something like this. By default, users would get to this page by clicking Documentation. However, you can easily make this your main page if you want your users to jump right in.

Default Theme

When you first set up your develop hub on ReadMe, we build you a basic site using the colors from your logo. If you're on the free plan, this is what your hub will look like. If you're on a paid plan, you can tweak the colors, fonts and styles for this theme.

Solid Header

This is the second most simple theme you can go with. Your background doesn't have to be solid — the theme builder lets you choose between colors, images, gradients and more. With just a few clicks, you can have a hub that looks great and fits your brand.

Three Columns

Ever since Stripe created the three column layout for their documentation, it's been all the rage. With just one click, you can turn on this layout for your documentation. It's optimized for API documentation with endpoints, however it works for anything.

Custom CSS

Looking to stand out? The startup plan lets you modify the CSS, and the business plan lets you add JavaScript and edit some of the HTML. With just a little bit of work, your developer hub can perfectly match whatever look your site is going for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Developer Hubs

  • What is a developer hub?

A developer hub lets you connect with and support developers building on your platform. Anytime you see docs.site.com or devs.example.com, that's probably a developer hub. Common features include documentation, tutorials, support, and key generation. Still not sure? See our examples.

  • Why not host it myself?

It may seem simple, but there's a lot involved in launching a developer hub. First, you have to build it. Even with an open source documentation generator, this takes time. By the time you've built it, you're low on time to actually write the documentation. However, the less obvious benefits come later on. Deploying is a hassle, and you're less likely to keep documentation up to date if it involves editing code manually and deploying.

  • Why not use [insert other platform]?

There are various other platforms that exist, however they all have at least one of the following pitfalls:

    • Too Complicated

Many are expensive, clunky pieces of software that try to do everything from managing your API to storing your data. ReadMe offers the most important features, all while keeping it simple enough that you can set it up in no time.

    • No Customization

Your API is the best business development tool you have going for you! Your developer site should be an extension of your brand.

  • What does crowdsourced mean?

No matter how much of an effort a developer puts in, documentation invariably is missing information or becomes out of date. By allowing anyone to suggest edits (much like a wiki), you can rely on the community to help keep everthing up to date and iron out any confusion. Combined with comments and a support section, your documentation can easily become community driven.

How ReadMe Works

  • How can I add documentation?

The editor is an easy-to-use markdown-based editor that supports dragging and dropping for things like code snippets or callouts.

Or, if you document your API right in your code, you can import it from GitHub! We'll create stubs from the code, and you can edit the rest on the site.

  • How customizable is ReadMe?

Very! All paid plans get access to the theme editor, which makes it easy to create a great looking developer hub that matches your site with minimal effort. Some plans offer custom CSS, HTML or JavaScript, too. You can check out the examples section to see some of what's possible.

  • I need a feature that isn't listed!

We did our best to cover all the features the average Developer Hub has, but everyone has different needs. Contact us, and we'll see what we can do! Don't forget you have access to the CSS, HTML and JavaScript; oftentime requested features can be fixed that way.

Payments

  • How does the free trial work?

The free trial requires no credit card up front, and lasts until you're ready to launch. You'll be able to try out every feature ReadMe offers, however non-admins won't be able to view your site until you pick a plan and launch.

  • Can I cancel my plan?

You may cancel any time! If you're looking to cancel but keep your settings and documentation, contact us and we can downgrade your hub to the trial tier that will save your settings and changes until you're ready to turn it back on.

  • What happens if I down/upgrade?

Your monthly bill will be prorated to reflect the changes. If you downgrade to a plan that doesn't support features you're using, the feature will be disabled but your settings will be saved.

  • What about Open Source projects?

ReadMe was built almost entirely on Open Source projects, so we want to give back. If you're an open source project, there's an option when you publish your site. Fill out the form, and we'll upgrade you to our Open Source tier for free! It's the least we can do to give back.

  • Is there a free plan?

We have a free plan for Open Source projects! If you're just looking for a free plan to try ReadMe out, don't worry — each plan comes with a free trial, and you don't pay anything until you're ready to launch.
